Dietary Supplements

We comprehensively test dietary and sports supplements to ensure they contain only what is on the label and no harmful levels of contaminants or substances banned by major sport organizations. In addition, we offer recognized registration and certification programs for manufacturing processes and products.

In our laboratory in Rheda-Wiedenbrück we evaluate the composition of dietary supplements and ingredients for many parameters and contaminations, including:

  • Elements / heavy metals
  • Pesticide residues
  • Nutritional values
  • Microbiological
  • Allergens
  • Residues and contaminants
  • And many more
Testing for Banned Substances

To help minimize the risk of unintended doping by elite athletes and athletes of all levels, we test sport supplements for more than 270 banned substances in our laboratories in Rheda-Wiedenbrück and Ann Arbor (Michigan, USA). These include performance enhancing substances like anabolic steroids, stimulants, diuretics and selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs) and other substances banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and other sports organizations. In keeping with our mission of improving public health and safety for consumers or athletes, NSF is thereby supporting clean sports.

We work with the customer in mind and our tests offer the highest possible transparency.

We perform analyses for banned substances in Europe as part of certification programs and as an independent service as well. In collaboration with our Ann Arbor, USA, location we offer testing of sports and dietary supplements as part of certification programs.

GMP Registration for Dietary Supplements

Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) are guidelines that provide a system of processes, procedures and documentation to assure a product has the identity, strength, composition, quality and purity that appear on its label.

These GMP requirements are listed in Section 8 of NSF/ANSI 173, which is the only American National Standard in the dietary supplement industry developed in accordance with the FDA’s 21 CFR part 111.

NSF registers dietary supplement, ingredient and raw material manufacturers, as well as distribution, warehousing and packaging companies, as meeting GMP requirements. The audits are performed by highly qualified, locally specialized auditors from Europe, North America and Asia.

Advantages of GMP Registration

  • Increases confidence in the preparedness of the location for FDA inspections
  • Eases entry into new, international markets, in particular the U.S.
  • Allows use of the NSF mark in marketing materials (but not on product labels)
  • Ensures continual monitoring of the QA system and use of standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Meets the prerequisites for product certifications
Product Certification

Building on the GMP registration program for dietary supplement manufacturing facilities, NSF certifies dietary supplements and functional food products and ingredients to the requirements of NSF/ANSI 173, the only American National Standard for dietary supplements.

The certification process encompasses:

  • Verification of label claims and formulation review (toxicological evaluation)
  • Testing to identify and quantify ingredients
  • Testing for contaminants and residues
  • Semi-annual Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) audits of the production facility

Product certification also meets the prerequisites for Certified for Sport® certification.

Certified Products

All products certified by NSF International in the U.S. are found in this list or via the product search.

Certified for Sport®

NSF International's Certified for Sport® program was created to meet the growing demands of athletes, coaches and all those concerned about banned substances in sports supplements. The program certifies that what is on the label is in the bottle and that the product does not contain unsafe levels of contaminants, prohibited substances and masking agents.

Here is a brief summary of what this means for manufacturers:

Certified for Sport® helps dieticians, coaches and athletes make more informed decisions when choosing sports supplements. MLB, NHL and CFL clubs are permitted to only provide and recommend products that are Certified for Sport®, and players are urged to only use these products.  The Certified for Sport® certification is also recommended by the NFL, PGA, LPGA, CCES, CPSDA and Taylor Hooton Foundation as well as many other sports organizations.

Check the Certified for Sport® website or app to see whether your nutritional supplement already meets the requirements of the Certified for Sport® program.

NSF Collaborates with the Austrian Skiing Federation

NSF supports the Austrian Skiing Federation with testing their supplements for prohibited substances. This includes the products for two-time Olympic gold medalist and winner of seven consecutive alpine skiing world cups, Marcel Hirscher. We take pride in contributing to minimize the risk of inadvertent doping for athletes of the Austrian Skiing Federation.

Doping and Prevention

Together with strong partners, NSF International works against unintentional doping of nutritional supplements and for doping prevention. Our work supports the certification course Doping & Doping Prevention by the University for Health Sciences, Medical Informatics and Technology (UMIT) in Tyrol.

We recommend this course to our customers and partners who work in this field.
